Tar River Outfitters offers premier semi-guided and fully guided whitetail deer hunts in eastern North Carolina, just outside Grimesland. We operate on three privately owned tracts of land, each stretching to the scenic Tar River, offering a rare and diverse hunting experience.

🎯 Why We Started

We started this business because we know how rare it is to have access to such a vast variety of game animals and waterfowl. I grew up on this land, farming with my family, and later realized that most hunters never get the chance to experience a place that truly has it all—fields, woods, swamps, river access, and abundant wildlife. I want to share this experience with others.

👋 Meet the Owner

My name is Justin Nichols. I studied Agricultural Business at NC State, earned a Welding Technology degree from Pitt Community College, and later graduated from East Carolina University in Industrial Engineering. I previously taught welding at Pitt Community College and now teach at Martin Community College.

Through teaching, I developed a passion for helping others succeed. That same passion drives Tar River Outfitters—because seeing others find joy and success in the outdoors gives me purpose and satisfaction in what I do.

I’m married with four beautiful children. My wife Bridget will likely be the one you speak to when booking your hunt. My brother Jeremy helps guide hunts, and several close friends—who know this land as well as we do—are part of our team, providing the utmost support and service to every hunter who joins us.

Justin Nichols – Owner & Lead Guide

Founder of Tar River Outfitters, Justin grew up farming on this land and has spent decades learning its terrain and wildlife. With degrees in Agricultural Business (NC State), Welding Technology (Pitt Community College), and Industrial Engineering (East Carolina University), Justin brings both technical expertise and a deep love for the outdoors. He currently teaches welding at Martin Community College and is driven by a passion for helping others succeed—whether in the classroom or out in the field.

👩 Bridget Nichols – Booking & Client Relations

Justin’s wife, Bridget, is the friendly voice behind your booking experience. She handles scheduling, logistics, and communication to make sure every hunter is well-prepared and welcomed. Her attention to detail and warm personality help set the tone for a smooth and enjoyable hunt.

👨 Jeremy Nichols – Scouting Specialist

Justin’s brother, Jeremy, plays a key role in guiding hunts and scouting the land. With a deep understanding of the terrain, Jeremy helps hunters get into the right spot at the right time. His dedication and knowledge make him an invaluable part of the team.

• Semi-Guided Hunts

Includes pre-scouted locations, trail camera photos, transportation, and field dressing assistance.

Hunters can choose to hunt fields in the morning and switch to woods in the afternoon using box stands, two-man stands, or blinds.

• Fully Guided Hunts

One-on-one guidance from our experienced team, including scouting, setup, and game recovery.

Ideal for those seeking a more hands-on experience or targeting trophy bucks.
